Uttara, which means north, and Khand, which means half, make up the name Uttarakhand. Tourism in Uttarakhand is found in Northern India. When the President of India approved a statute in December 2006, Uttaranchal was renamed Uttarakhand. The Kauravas, Guptas, Kushanas, Katyuris, Kunindas Palas, Chands, Panwars, and British all held power in turn throughout Uttarakhand.
